Bella Stradale: Keeneland September Yearling Sale 2021

Bella Stradale was picked by bloodstock agent Larry Zap due to her beautiful walk and physical makeup, along with her strong pedigree page. Like a Ferrari Stradale, Bella Stradale was a standout and frankly we thought she would sell for over $100k. We watched her go through the sales ring and above our budget with the hammer falling at $80k. To our surprise when we checked the results 20 minutes later, she had failed to meet her reserve (RNA). We immediately headed to the consigners barn and negotiated a post sale (PS) price of $70k.

Here is her walk video from the sale:

Currently Bella Stradale is approximately 15 hands 2 inches tall, but based on her April foaling date she will be above average size when fully grown. She is well muscled with both a nice shoulder and rear end, and has a super walk that suggests she will have a long stride.

Bella Stradale is by the outstanding stallion and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. His stud fee is $60k and his yearlings sold this year have averaged $202k.

Like all horses purchased by Daytona Stable, we feel Bella Stradale was a value purchase. Her dam Saratoga Belle placed in MSW races from 5f to a mile. Likely due to Saratoga Belle’s broodmare value, she never ran for a tag and sold for $250k in foal to her initial mating to Mastery. Bella Stradale is her second foal and statistically second foals perform well. Bella Stradale’s second dam produced three stakes winners including Ballagh Rocks who has earned $815,957 and is still racing. The vertical strength of her page shows by Bella Stradale’s dams half sister produced stakes winer Eye Of Jedi (earning $355,778.) Under her third dam is super stallion and exceptional broodmare sire Unbridled Song ($1,311,800 earner). An A++ Nick, 40% of fillies bred similar to Bella Stradale have been stake winners, an impressive stat.

The initial partnership will partner Bella Stradale at the actual sale price of $70,000 ($7k for 10%), plus vetting costs, other purchase expenses, and vanning to Florida. In addition, the partnership agreement will require partners to pay their share of operating expenses (primarily training and vet) quarterly in advance. The initial partnership cost will contain these expenses through the end of the year and is estimated to be approximately $8400 for 10%.

Bella Stradale is already in Ocala at Harris Training Center. She will start her training this fall and if things go well, she will be transferred to Tom Drury in Kentucky next spring.

Owning thoroughbred racehorses is highly speculative. The high standard deviation of performance results in many horses losing nearly all their value, while fewer number of horses are highly successful. However, Daytona Stable puts up their own money and is truly a partner. The only managing partner bonus would result if the partnership horse sells for a greater value than the initial purchase price.
